Can bad weather cause a car accident? You bet!

If you live in the state of New Jersey, you know that each month presents its own challenges with respect to the weather.

During the summer months, the sun is typically shining bright. However, there are times when thunderstorms roll into the area. The winter months are often full of sleet, freezing rain and snow, all of which can make it difficult to tackle the state's many roadways.

It's difficult enough to stay safe when driving, but even more so when the weather takes a turn for the worse.

If you find yourself driving in heavy rain or strong wind in the months to come, here are some tips to keep you safe:

  • Be patient: When you're in a rush, it's more likely that you will make a mistake. When you're patient, you can assess every situation to ensure that you're doing the best you can to remain safe.
  • Leave more space: You should leave as much space as possible between your vehicle and the one in front of yours. This is important in wet weather, as stopping quickly on slick roads is not nearly as easy.
  • Use your headlights: With the help of your headlights, it's easier to see the road ahead. It's also easier for other drivers to see your vehicle.
  • Prepare for wind gusts: A gust can hit your vehicle at any time, so you need to be ready. This means many things, such as keeping both hands on the wheel and driving below the speed limit.
  • Watch larger vehicles: Commercial trucks, for example, are more likely to tip in strong winds as the result of their high profile. Keep your distance from these types of vehicles.
  • Never drive distracted. This is important at all times, even when weather conditions are perfect. However, when inclement weather is in the area, you really need to double down and focus on the task at hand.

Bad weather definitely increases the likelihood of a car accident, so you need to take the appropriate precautions if you find yourself behind the wheel.

If you're in a car accident, move to safety, check yourself for injuries and call 911. If another driver was responsible, you'll eventually want to learn more about your legal rights as the victim of the crash.
